writers - project updates

Project update – October 2011

"Sorry this email is so long, but I haven't the time to make it shorter..."

Okay, so we’ve adapted Blaise Pascal’s 17th century quote to fit the modern world. But it’s even more relevant today. We now need to condense into short scripts, web pages, emails or tweets what we used to say in long brochures, workshops or mail packs.

This takes far more time, skill and effort than the longer versions, and it’s great so many of our clients understand this.

If it’s not pithy, it’s a pity

Recently, we’ve written video scripts to help Lloyds TSB, Barclays, Royal Mail, Sky and BT talk to colleagues. And companies are using our scriptwriting skills to reach their customers, too – for example, Cape DBI’s video animation explaining their industrial cleaning services for oil rigs and power stations, plus a retail investor script that was part of Sainsbury’s annual review.

We can be short with you, too

As well as taglines for a financial spread-betting company and a premium paint brand, we’ve researched and written bite-size interactive guides about whisky, perfumes, cigars and chocolates for Nuance’s trailblazing duty free concept store in Turkey. We’ve also crafted the short copy for this year’s D&AD invitation, developed a social media campaign for Australian lager brand Tooheys across Facebook and Google, and tweeted on behalf of a client at a major political event in London.

Every rule has an exception

Conversely, we’ve noticed many FMCG brands are keener to say more on packs and labels. To this end, we’ve helped Annie Sloan Paints, Glacéau Vitamin Water and Wilkinson use this minimal space to express their brand personalities. Just beware the word count police!

Long live long copy!

Recently, we’ve written corporate literature and annual reports for companies in European broadcasting, worldwide TV production, Chinese container terminals, Russian steel and mining, Lloyd’s of London insurance market, investment management, utilities and UK retailing. Add to this CR projects for many of these companies, and it’s clear that reports of the death of long copy have been greatly exaggerated.

We feel at home in the house

Despite the doom and gloom in the property market, we’ve been doing our fair share of work for companies who focus on interiors, such as Wren’s Kitchens, Benson for Beds, Howdens Joinery, Classical Flagstones and flooring business InterfaceFlor.

We’re pretty good with words - for a ten year old

Writers is ten years’ old. I know, we can’t believe it either. Though not quite a museum piece ourselves, we have been helping the Natural History Museum, Museum of London Docklands and Historic Royal Palaces develop their print and digital communications. We also wrote exhibition panels for Bristol City Museum & Art Gallery and branding and tone of voice development for Bristol’s new museum, M-Shed.

True to Pascal’s quote, this update is long enough. So let's just say, get in touch if there’s anything we can help with. No job too long… or short.
