writers - project updates

Project update – February 2011

When to use the 'c' word in front of clients...

We’re talking about ‘copywriting’ of course. And there are lots of different ways Writers can make sure that the words you use are working as hard as possible. Here’s a quick reminder of how we can help, and who we’ve been helping in recent months.

Copywriting on tap – turn on, turn off as you need it

With six in-house writers and a dozen freelancers, there’s always a writer with the right experience available - whatever the sector or medium - even if all you need is a headline checked or a paragraph edited. Just as we can act as cover or additional help for your usual writing resource.

Recently, we’ve written capability brochures, whitepapers and case studies for Cable & Wireless Worldwide, and staff comms for Royal Mail, Barclays Global Retail Banking (both video scripts) and RBS. There are projects like Howdens Little Book of Kitchen Design, straplines and event booklets for PwC, a 200 page website for the Actuarial Profession, and annual report work for Lloyd’s of London and RTL Group – a leading European TV, radio and internet services company. Now add to this, campaign ideas for the University of Aberdeen, DM for MBNA and RSA, menu lines for Gourmet Burger Kitchen, ads for AXA, GE Capital and Hitachi Rail, articles for Rolls Royce and University of Exeter Business School, a sales presentation for Sony and a newsletter for The Crown Estate, and you’ll see our experience is as deep as it is broad.

Advice and expertise on hand, whatever size of project

We've plenty of expertise you can call on, even before there's any writing to do. Want to discuss concepts or structure, or get a tactful appraisal of some existing copy? We’ve advised organisations as diverse as University of Glasgow, Sky, and Visa on high-level strategy documents. And we've plenty of experience building and managing teams on large or urgent projects. In fact, we’re currently helping Northern Rock and Norwich & Peterborough Building Society rewrite thousands of different customer letters.

Creating a tone of voice

Often a crucial part of any branding or internal comms project, we’ve worked with many organisations including City University London and the University of Glasgow, PC World, to develop a tone to suit their brand or campaign personality. Of course, we can then create guidelines, and apply the language itself as we have recently for MBNA, Centrica, NHS Jobs and Bristol’s exciting new museum, Mshed.

Helping you with new business proposals

We’re often asked to add the ‘bit about copywriting’ in tender documents and new business proposals. And we’re happy to pitch in on creative pitches with some sample copy supported by a rationale, some well-crafted headlines, or an alternative view of your own concept work.

Improving your own writing skills

Would a short writing course help your people focus on clear communication, or learn about creative copy or tone of voice? Or how about something more specific, such as how to take and give a copy brief? We can tailor a course to your needs, as we have done recently for Black Horse Finance and npower. We’ve also provided guides to better writing for organisations such as entertainment and media lawyers, Schillings, City University London and Northern Rock.

Every writing task is different, so the best way to find out how you can use the ‘c’ word to your advantage is to get in touch and let’s see if we can help.
